A Burning Desire for the Hearth Industry and Entrepreneurship
Austin Tulin, owner of SOMD Hearth, has been working since he was fourteen with fireplaces and chimneys. He started out at a local hardware store – American Hardware, before they went out of business – in their fireplace department, which is where he was introduced to the Hearth Industry. When the hardware store closed, Austin helped his manager open his own hearth business and then worked for him.
Then Austin worked for the local electric union (Local 26) for a few years but kept getting requests from previous customers to service their pellet stoves. So, he started doing that in the evenings after his day job. After a while, Austin decided he needed to choose between the union and fireplaces. He sold his 73 Gran Torino project car to fund the business and opened up a tiny showroom in the Chesapeake Market Place in St. Leonard MD.
After a little while he was able to move the store to a location on Budds Creek Rd in Leonardtown MD.
After a few years at that location, he realized he needed a larger place for burning displays, and that was when the decision was made to move to the current location on Point Lookout Road. The move was complete in October of 2018 and slowly began remodeling the store to show displays. The remodeling process is ongoing as we do the work in house, as well as upgrade models to keep up with new technology.
Over 16 years later, Austin is still selling and servicing fireplaces, stoves and chimneys but through his own company in a community he is proud to serve.
By the way, the new showroom as been a part of the local history for a long time and was most notably the old Loveville Post Office; people would travel to have mail say from Loveville! And, more recently, it was home to Loveville Traditions a furniture and antique store. Stop by and check it out for yourself!
